Leslie Danks Burke

About Me

Leslie Danks Burke is a lawyer and public advocate in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Before moving to Ithaca ten years ago, Leslie practiced law at Debevoise & Plimpton in New York City, working on litigation surrounding the World Trade Center disaster as well as other major international arbitration and litigation for public and private sector clients. She has maintained an extensive pro bono practice throughout her law career, and has been twice awarded by the Legal Aid Society of New York for outstanding community service.

In 2012, Leslie was a candidate for United States Congress in New York's 23rd district. Today, Leslie sits on on the Agriculture and Infrastructure subgroups of Governor Cuomo’s Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council. She serves on the statewide Planned Parenthood advocacy board (PPANY) and the Board of Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes, which provides health care and education services in Steuben, Chemung, Tioga, Broome, Chenango, Tompkins, Schuyler and Allegany Counties. Leslie is Vice-President of the Tompkins County Public Library Foundation, and is a passionate advocate for sound education, health care, and agricultural policy.

Leslie graduated from the top-ranked University of Chicago Law School, where she worked to protect the civil rights of public housing residents and specialized in international law. Leslie graduated from the University of Colorado with magna cum laude degrees in history and international relations. She was born in Colorado, where her parents are wheat farmers.
