Dr. Karyne Messina

Author of new book on Misogyny and its effect on society, today and in the past

About Me

My name is Dr. Karyne E. Messina. I am a psychologist and psychoanalyst in full-time private practice in Chevy Chase, MD.

I have a book coming out in April about many of the struggles women have had to endure for hundreds of years while focusing on those that have occurred within the last two centuries. It is entitled: Misogyny, Projective Identification and Mentalization: Psychoanalytic, Social and Institutional Manifestations. For anyone interested in checking it out, the Amazon link is:

My book tells the story of women who have been erased, dismissed, devalued, harassed and abused. It illustrates why this phenomenon occurs and what can be done to change the picture. It illustrates what has happened to many women who have made major contributions to society, only to be “erased.”

I am also interested in eradicating the stigma of mental health. In terms of charitable work, I donate time working with and finding quality mental health care for individuals who have limited or no resources. As an avocation, I do glassblowing and metal work. My pieces have been shown locally as well as in Miami, LA, New York, Monaco, and Shanghai.
