About Me

Joy Smiley is the Communications & Training Manager for the Regulatory Implementation Office within UnitedHealthcare. She has 20+ years experience in instructional design & development, adult-learning methods, training, facilitating, creating educational and curriculum related materials and eLearning for many industry and soft-skill areas. Ten of those years were as a consultant/contractor. Prior experience, includes work as an IT Analyst and for mainframe and client-server systems, and 15+ years in communications Joy is a highly motivated individual with strategic thinking and problem solving skills. Her ability to translate technical information into non-technical language for the common man (and woman) gives her an advantage over her competitors. Joy’s versatile and flexible working style allow her to fit in well as a team player or to effectively work independently. Joy is an excellent, thoughtful communicator that develops and delivers effective messaging with the 5+ W’s (who, what, when, where, why and how). She has a diverse background in many industries including: Information Technology (IT), Healthcare, Regulatory, Call Centers, Ticket Reservations Systems, Financial/Banking, Airline/Transportation, Energy, Human Resources, Legal, Agricultural, Government, Military, Insurance and Retail. Joy has lived and worked in 12 states and multiple countries including Panama, Central America, the Philippines, and England. She has served as communications liaison and trainer with vendors and co-workers in India, the Philippines, China, and Mexico.

Some of her training skill sets include compliance and concept based gap analysis, audience analysis, business analysis, operations analysis and content analysis, determination of appropriate and effective solutions, application of adult learning theories and instructional design methodologies to meet the needs for blended learning solutions, design and development of self-paced eLearning, Webinars, facilitated classroom materials, job aids, etc.

Her communications skills include multiple brainstorming techniques, interviewing subject matter experts, reporting, correspondence, business storytelling, proofreading, editing, copywriting, innovative and creative thinking/solutioning, reflective listening, public speaking, facilitating, newsletter & web content development/ownership, content creation, content strategy and content management, technical writing, negotiating, collaboration techniques, and artistic solutions.

Some other areas of expertise include: Developing Cross-Functional, Cross-Cultural, and Virtual Teamwork methods, Employee Change Management for Business Acquisitions, identifying the right medium for communication, and then developing/maintaining that medium, such as newsletters, videos (storyboarding, script, animation, and audio) websites, newsreels, bulletin boards, etc.

Joy recently won an ‘Outstanding Service Hero Award’ from UnitedHealthcare which is presented to the top 1% of employees company-wide, who go above and beyond to serve members and customers, to exemplify corporate cultural values and consistently deliver exceptional service.

Joy received her B.A. in Education from the University of Northern Iowa and served in the U.S. Air Force.

Joy is drawn to and passionate about charitable organizations in her local community such as “Clean The World” in Las Vegas, NV (where she helps pre-sort hygiene products from hotels and casinos for recycling or creating hygiene packs for catastrophic events, third world countries, or homeless folks close by). Her favorite international charity is in Panama, Central America called “Fight Poverty: Educate Women in Panama” by Fundacion Calicanto through Global Giving (where donations provide scholarships in a professional/vocational training program for poverty stricken women in Panama City, Panama to teach them not only skills, but also self-esteem to become confident, self-reliant bread-winners in the high-end hotel industry for their family). Her hobbies and interests include singing at events, community theatre, creative writing, drawing, reading and teaching others how to play the piano and sing with joy and confidence by sharing secrets of successful performance.
