About Me

Gina Payton Lagarde, MD, MBA is a pediatrician and a Public Health Administrator/Medical Director for the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health. Her career contributions and achievements illustrate her passion and dedication to promoting and protecting the health, safety and well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

Dr. Gina Lagarde started her medical career in 1992. She has more than 20 years of professional practice experience in pediatrics. She has worked in clinical academia, as well as in hospital, emergency room, rural, outpatient, and parish/county health unit clinical settings. Over these years, she has held multiple medical staff leadership positions and served on sub-committees of several hospitals. Dr. Gina Lagarde is clinically active in the public health units of her region, and maintains hospital courtesy medical staff privileges at a local hospital. She has also maintained her position as Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics of Tulane University Health Sciences Center, School of Medicine since 1998.

With the desire to make a larger impact on the health and well-being of more people, Dr. Gina Lagarde earned a Master of Business Administration degree in 2003 and made a career-changing move into public health administration. In 2004, she was an Assistant Professor in the LSU Health Sciences Center’s Department of Pediatrics and served as Director of Clinical Services and of Maternal and Child Health Services for the City of New Orleans Department of Health. She then advanced to the Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health as the State Child Health Medical Director in 2005 and was actively engaged, at the national, state, and local levels, in the management and implementation of public health and safety programs, grants management, and public health policy development that impact families and children. Dr. Lagarde received special recognition by the National Commission on Children and Disasters for making meaningful contributions to the development of the Commission’s 2010 Report to the President and Congress, which identifies gaps in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery for children and makes recommendations to close the gaps.

Since 2011, Dr. Gina Lagarde is currently the Public Health Administrator/Medical Director for the Louisiana Office of Public Health, Southeast Region 9. In this position, she serves as Chief Executive Officer to the Assistant Secretary of Health and manages the administrative operations of public health programs and clinical operations of the health units in Louisiana five parishes (counties). She is also the medical consultant on environmental health issues and the regional public health rapid response lead for communicable disease outbreak investigations and disaster-related emergencies. Through collaboration, partnerships, and service on coalitions, advisory and commissioned boards, Dr. Lagarde continues to improve access to medical care for Louisiana residents.

Dr. Lagarde enjoys spending time with her children and family, zydeco and ballroom dancing, traveling, art, and logic puzzles.
