Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute (HPHCI) is currently seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Therapeutics Research and Infectious Disease Epidemiology (TIDE) group within the Department of Population Medicine ( as a Project Manager. The Project Manager is responsible for the overall management and oversight of all project work to ensure that the goals and objectives are accomplished within budget, schedule, and scope. S/he will have an opportunity to work on various comparative effectiveness studies, patient-centered outcomes research studies, and public health surveillance projects. This position requires excellent communication skills for close collaboration with investigators and project managers, both within HPHCI and with external institutions and collaborators.


  • Provide day-to-day management for single- or multi-site research projects. Use project management principles to evaluate study progress and identify risks and problems; support implementation of system improvements. Ensure project adheres to planned timelines and progresses according to project goals.
  • Draft and manage project budgets, including tracking expenditures, payment to vendors, and preparation of financial reports; communicate about resource and budget expenditures to project leads to ensure smooth operation of all aspects of research studies.
  • Serve as a liaison to project sponsors and teams at study sites to keep them informed of progress and answer inquiries. Interact with study investigators and staff within HPHCI and collaborating institutions. Plan or oversee planning of conference calls and in-person meetings.
  • Oversee preparation of Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications, amendments, and reports and ensure human subject/HIPAA protections are in place. Collaborate in the development of study protocols with senior project managers and investigators.
  • Manage the processes of data collection, data analysis, and results reporting on research projects; facilitate creation of tracking databases and data entry forms, ensure data is entered into databases accurately, and prepare data updates for the study team and funder.

  • Bachelor's degree plus 4 or more years of relevant experience coordinating or managing small to medium, multi-site projects and cross-functional initiatives, using standard PM methodologies in a health care or academic environment or similar. A Master's degree in public health or related field is strongly preferred. Experience mentoring junior staff.

  • Able to communicate and collaborate effectively and regularly with senior staff in the organization. Experience managing relationships with external partners, subcontractors, and vendors. Able to work independently with excellent judgment, prioritize work, operate under tight deadlines, and meet deadlines.

  • A solid understanding of a research environment, including experience with IRB submissions and proposal/grant preparation. Able to organize and track budget expenditures and oversee subcontractor/vendor budgets and scopes of work. Understanding of basic risk management principles.

  • Proficiency with various software packages, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, and other desktop tools.

  • Able to handle confidential and sensitive information discreetly.
