Job Summary:
The Director of Marketing and Communications plans and implements the Division of Student Affairs strategy for marketing and communications activities to help educate students, engage the community, and enrich the Northwestern experience. The director leads the efforts of a department comprised of 3 full-time marketing staff, 2 graduate assistants, and approximately 20 student workers in marketing and communications activities, and partners at the strategic and operational level with University partners and the Division's functional departments in the development of effective marketing and communications campaigns. The director oversees major marketing and communications campaigns, including marketing initiatives for University Commencement. This position reports to the Senior Executive Director of Division Services.

Working Conditions: Evenings and weekend work may occasionally be required as workload demands.

Specific Responsibilities:
Marketing and Communications Strategy and Planning

  • Develop and maintain the Marketing and Communications strategic plan for the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Partner with departments in the Division to develop and implement marketing and communications strategies appropriate for their functions and goals.
  • Represent Student Affairs and develop partnerships among University marketing and communications groups and broader University initiatives.
  • Manage and optimize the budget for marketing and communications efforts.
  • Measure the effectiveness of marketing and communication processes and campaigns to ensure they support the Division's goals and priorities.

Departmental Operations

  • Oversee timely, quality marketing and communications initiatives via effective channels in support of the marketing and communications strategic plan and the Division's goals and priorities.
  • Ensure systems and processes are in place to prioritize and support marketing and communications requests.
  • When appropriate, design, develop, edit, and/or distribute marketing and communications deliverables.
  • Provide guidance and support to enable Student Affairs departments to create marketing and communications plans and campaigns that are consistent with Student Affairs Marketing design principles and convey the desired Student Affairs image across all media.
  • Support social media initiatives throughout the Division via guidance and training.
  • Ensure the Division's websites are consistent in design and support timely communication of departmental information.

Staff Management and Supervision

  • Define staff role requirements that maximize the department's effectiveness and capabilities.
  • Directly supervise 2 full-time staff and 2 graduate assistants.
  • Recruit, onboard, and train staff to fill departmental vacancies.
  • Develop staff training plans to enhance skills and expertise and grow the department's capabilities.
  • Regularly engage with staff to provide feedback on performance and development in alignment with Northwestern's Performance Excellence program.
  • Maintain a departmental climate that attracts, motivates, and retains quality staff.

Division of Student Affairs Partner

  • Participate in Division initiatives as required and appropriate.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience, including responsibility for the marketing and communications strategy and activities of an organization.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline (marketing, business administration, management, advertising, journalism, and communications).
  • Experience planning and developing marketing campaigns and communications activities.
  • Experience developing and implementing successful social media marketing strategies.
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent projects.

Minimum Competencies:

  • Strong strategic, creative, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to manage and motivate staff.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Effective oral communication skills.
  • Effectiveness in setting priorities and discovering new ways to create efficiencies.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (CS6 preferred) or related graphic design software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline (marketing, business administration, management, advertising, journalism, or communications).
  • 7 years' experience leading marketing and communications campaigns.
  • Experience in a higher education or other non-profit environment.

Preferred Competencies:

  • Experience developing a strategic communications plan for an organization.
  • Familiarity with principles of effective graphic design.
  • Knowledge of HTML and web design.
  • Experience with photography and working with advanced photo editing software.
