Manatt's business development and marketing team is a high-performing team that drives the firm's priorities and revenue growth by protecting the firm's reputation, building the brand, and positioning the firm and its spokespeople externally.

The communications director will play the lead role in telling the story of the organization and is responsible for the firm's media relations and social media strategy, internal communications, and identification of opportunities to enhance the firm's visibility nationally.

Responsibilities include:

  • Establish, own and drive communications, media and public relations strategies to strengthen the firm's name recognition and enhance the firm's reputation and image across industry sectors and functional practices, and to further differentiate the firm from its peers.
  • Develop media and campaign strategies and oversee their execution, with emphasis on managing multiple public relations and communications initiatives in parallel, including launching reports to the media, working with spokespeople on media interviews, leveraging industry events and responding to media requests.
  • Direct the development and execution of communications initiatives, including press releases, announcements, statements, talking points, collateral, campaigns, advertisements, social site presence, awards and directory submissions process, internal communications, and the firm's alumni program and events.
  • Create compelling materials/stories about key practice offerings and partners.
  • Provide leadership and counsel on reputation-building objectives, positioning, content themes, and messaging and crisis communications strategies.
  • Develop and execute an integrated digital communications strategy across online platforms. Generate digital content, videos and infographics, and distribute them through the communication channels for key campaigns.
  • Actively lead, build and manage the communications team, including graphics designers, communications specialists, media specialists and copywriters, to produce high-quality publications and materials on time and within budget.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with key reporters/editors from mainstream media and various legal trade publications and social media platforms, e.g., Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook.
  • Play a critical role in establishing and maintaining a consistent voice for all stakeholders throughout the organization. Help define and create consistent messaging that inspires, informs and instructs our internal and external audiences on what kind of business Manatt is and why we're here. Provide Manatt teams, clients and press the key talking points to describe our position-in a consistent, yet personalized way.
  • Collaborate with business development, lateral and campus recruiting, and other functions to develop marketing material in support of their external messaging.
  • Help establish marketing performance metrics to track progress toward major objectives.
  • Manage alumni program to enhance loyalty. Develop attorney placement options and enhance reputation.

Position/Program Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 10-15 years of strategic communications experience with demonstrated success in managing multiple aspects of media relations, digital media and branding.
  • Regarded as an industry-leading communicator, writer and strategist, with exceptional writing skills to translate complex concepts into easy-to-understand, compelling messaging.
  • Exceptional administrative, organizational and time-management skills; ability to set own priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills; ability to communicate with senior marketing leaders and C-level executives.
  • Experience working in challenging, deadline-driven environments.
  • Demonstrated understanding of media strategy at a national level through a proven record of success directing such efforts, preferably with a professional services or financial services firm or by working at a public relations agency.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of digital marketing techniques, marketing trends and industry-leading practices, with a focus on integrated marketing and campaign management.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with the highest levels of leadership, with emphasis on managing through a complex matrix organization and service providers.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the professional services industry and its businesses.
  • Skilled at managing resources to effectively achieve marketing goals, including budgets, talent and third-party suppliers.
  • Professional attitude and a team player.
  • Strong implementation orientation and focus on delivering ROI.
